Before I got that Molly was a ghost, I actually thought Sam was being all sincere and understanding because he was thinking about Jess and how sometimes no matter what you do, you can't save people you love and so on.
I definitely agree with what you said about Sam and the shades of grey. As he was saying about how the spirits who turn bad weren't bad people, you could sort of sense he was thinking about himself and his 'destiny'.
It was such a creepy episode, I actually jumped in my seat a few times!
